The Hirst Art Studies | Miniatures

The medium sized (pimped) boat & Rowboat.

It is early 2006 and I picked up where I left off in 2004 when it comes to boats. The second boat is a fantasy shaped-like boat and above all larger in any way then the 2004 row boat project . My first attempt in making a small cabin and a simple stern.

While sculpting this boat the idea came to me, sculpting the boat as a wooden boat with smooth railings. The lack of texture on the railing and the smooth front of the cabin gives the boat a nicer overall look. This boat is a true fantasy project with its sharp bow. Someone even told me that it looked a bit Elfish which could well be so.

Statistics: The medium boat can carry up to 6 miniatures standing on standard square bases.

- Long : 18.4 centimetres (7.24 inch) - Wide : 5.8 centimetres (2.28 inch) - High : 3.0 centimetres (1.18 inch)

The medium sized boat dressed up:

The medium sized boat looks quite straight forward with a minimum on detail. I wandered if I could dress the ship up by adding some simple but effective ornaments. I started with adding a rope around the hull of the vessel. From there I added a big clustered rope on the front of the boat, around its bow. The final addition was the mast. The base was made out of a barrel and the mast itself out of wood and rope. Since this is the dressed up version I added barrels and chests to it to. I think the result is quite good.

The Rowboat:

In 2004 I visited my friend in Berlin/Germany for one of the hobby sessions. At some point I started to sculpt a tiny boat just to improve my skills on wooden texture. The boat looked nice enough so I made a mold out of it. Unfortunately the boat itself broke but the mold was successful made. I cast a few of the boats for my own use and was not aware then what would follow out of this little exercise.

Statistics: The small boat can carry up to 3 miniatures standing on standard square bases
- Outside length : 10 cm / 3.94 “
- Inside length: 6.5 cm / 2.65 ”
- Outside width: 4 cm / 1.57 “
- Inside width: 3 cm / 1.18 “
- Height: 1.4 cm / 0.55 “

Painting the boat:

I painted the boat in different ways. Basically the first 2 layers are always the same. I start with a black basic layer, followed with a raw umber layer. From this point I can go a few directions. The first boat is painted using a yellow ochre brush. The second boat is painted using a red brown brush followed with a yellow ochre brush. It is optional to give the boat a dirt wash of a dark brown colour. In this case the ship gets a darker tone and does not stand out that much.

The small boat was the first test in sculpting a vessel. Although the boat looks simple it was quite an exercise to get this done. The boat can carry up to 3 miniatures and looks sober without any detail. The basic idea is to get the grain of the wood right. Its best that you judge for your self.
